Nine Projects Receive Community Fund Grants

The Apostle Islands Area Community Fund announced nine new grants at a public event May 14 at the Bayfield Inn. “We are pleased to be able to award a total of $27,997 this year,” said Patty Carver who chaired the Grants Committee.  “It’s really inspiring to see what organizations are able to accomplish with relatively small grants,” Carver commented.  Grants ranged from just over $1,000 to the maximum of $5,000.

Projects receiving funding in 2009 are:

  • Madeline Island Music Camp - $5,000 for staff support in preparation for their 25th Anniversary in 2010.
  • Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua - $1,170 for Apostle Islands Youth & African Children’s Exchange.
  • First American Prevention Center - $2,560 to re-establish a Junior Tribal Council.
Bayfield County - $3,000 for a wind feasibility study near Mt. Ashwabay.
  • Recreation Fitness Resources, Inc. - $3097 for staff training and two staff certifications.
Ashwabay Outdoor Educational Foundation, Inc. - $3,000 toward a Park Development Design & Build project.
  • Madeline Island Museum (SHSW) - $3,000 for the Anishinaabe Homecoming project.
  • Forgotten Wisdom, Inc. - $4,170 for the Red Cliff Youth Radio Documentary project.
  • Town of La Pointe- $3,000 for the Alternative Energy Feasibility Study.

The Apostle Islands Area Community Fund is a permanent community endowment, made possible with gifts large and small from individuals, families and businesses.  The Community Fund was established in 2000 by area residents as an affiliate of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.  An Advisory Board of leaders from Bayfield, Madeline Island and Red Cliff evaluate applications, recommend grants and also continue to grow the endowment to enhance the quality of life in the region. Members of the 2009 Advisory Board are Kathy Bergner, Patty Carver, Ray DePerry, Alan Fischlowitz, Fritz Grutzner, Kathryn Jensen, Barb McCann, Beth Meyers, Constance Teisberg Ross and Chair, Marcia Henry.
